چکیده

We incorporate a wage-bargaining structure in a dynamic general equilibrium model and show how this feature changes shortand long-run properties of equilibria compared with a perfectly competitive setting. We discuss how employment, capital and income shares respond to wage-setting shocks and show that adjustment dynamics depend decisively on the magnitude of the elasticity of substitution between labour and capital. Values of the elasticity below unity add persistence, tend to preserve stability and lead to empirically plausible adjustment patterns. By contrast, values above unity introduce additional volatility, thereby making steady states potentially unstable. JEL classification: D51, E24, E25.

Equilibrium Unemployment and Investment Under Product and Labour Market Imperfections

Equilibrium Unemployment and Investment Under Product and Labour Market Imperfections We study the implications of product market competition and investment for price setting, wage bargaining and thereby for equilibrium unemployment in an economy with product and labour market imperfections. We show that intensified product market competition will reduce equilibrium unemployment, whereas the ef...

One of the productive activities engaging the work force is reorganizing. When factors of production are better matched, productivity is higher. The probabilistic matching model of Diamond, Mortensen, and others provides a way to make the idea of reorganization precise. Because the flow of organizational effort generates benefits lasting well into the future, it is appropriate to think of organ...

Why Governments Should Tax Mobile Capital in the Presence of Unemployment

This paper shows that a small open economy, which suffers from involuntary unemployment, should levy a positive source-based tax on capital income. A revenue-neutral tax reform, which increases the capital tax rate and reduces the labour tax rate will induce firms to substitute labour for capital. Such a tax reform will lower marginal cost of production, increase output, reduce unemployment, an...

Indeterminacy, Bifurcations, and Unemployment Fluctuations

We incorporate imperfectly insured unemployment in the finance constrained economy proposed by Woodford (1986), by introducing unions and unemployment benefits financed by labor taxation. We show that this simple extension of the Woodford model changes drastically its stability conditions and local dynamics around the steady state. In fact, in contrast to related models in the literature, we fi...
